Eyre and Western Local Service Area

The Eyre and Western Local Service Area (LSA) encompasses the major business centres of Whyalla, Port Lincoln and Ceduna right through the Eyre Peninsula to the Western Australian border, comprising of 3 major patrol bases located at Port Lincoln, Whyalla and Ceduna as well as the 14 outstations of Cleve, Cowell, Kimba, Cummins, Tumby Bay, Lock, Minnipa, Elliston, Poochera, Streaky Bay, Wirrulla, Wudinna, Penong and Yalata. The LSA has a radius of approximately 254,000 square kilometres with a total population of approximately 70,000 residents and a diverse range of economic activities such as mining, farming and aquaculture. The LSA incorporates the Maralinga Tjartja Lands and numerous indigenous communities.

The headquarters of the Eyre and Western LSA is located at the Port Lincoln Police Complex, 3-5 Liverpool Street, Port Lincoln. Services provided from this station include Criminal Justice, Crime Scene, Crime Prevention and Intelligence.

Services from Whyalla Police Station include Whyalla Traffic, CIB, Criminal Justice, Crime Prevention, and services from Ceduna Police Station include Ceduna Traffic covering to the Western Australian border, CIB, Criminal Justice, Community Constables and general patrols.

The climate is Mediterranean owing to the LSA being skirt by a large portion of pristine coastline of approximately 2000 kilometres. Activities include diving, touring, 4wd driving, go-carting, fishing, yachting and many other community and club activities. According to Official Tourism SA records in 2010 there were 54,208 visitors to Ceduna, 28,211 visitors to Whyalla and 59,022 visitors to Port Lincoln.

Port Lincoln is perhaps the nation's biggest combined agricultural and fishing centre. Port Lincoln's primary industries include the production of lambs, wool and beef, cereal crops including wheat, oats, barley, canola, lupins etc. Tuna, prawns, lobster, abalone and scale fish are the major fishing and aquaculture industries. Port Lincoln hosts Tunarama, one of the largest and most popular free regional festivals in Australia held over the Australia Day long weekend.

Whyalla is fast building a name as a fisherman's paradise with a wide array of different species for anglers to try their skills at including the elusive 'big red snapper'. Over the Easter long weekend there are over 750 anglers that converge on the city to compete in the annual snapper fishing competition.

Australia's largest oyster festival 'Oysterfest' is held annually in Ceduna on the SA October long weekend.  It features the delicious oysters from Smoky Bay and Denial Bay, both cooked and natural, to be enjoyed with a glass of wine.
