The Southern Operations Service in general covers that part of the metropolitan area south of the River Torrens and the country local service areas south and east of Adelaide.
The Service is comprised of six Local Service Areas (LSA), three in the metropolitan area and three in the country regions:
The Southern Operations Executive is located at the Sturt Police Complex and provides support to the LSA's with policy, operations co-ordination, operations planning, finance, administrative, planning and multicultural services.
Field Training Officers are attached to Adelaide, Sturt and South Coast LSA's and conduct regular structured training days on topics which cover wide and varied subject material. Community Liaison Officers are assigned to most Local Service Areas and provide advice and assistance to LSA Commanders on matters relevant to the community. They assist with the co-ordination of all community policing programs, eg Neighbourhood Watch, Rural Watch, Business Watch, Council Watch and School Programmes/Watch.
One Multicultural Liaison Officer attached to the LSA is responsible for liaising with Aboriginal, ethnic groups and individuals on specific policing and community problems within the Service. The Southern Operations Service also has four Aboriginal police aides that assist police personnel in the metropolitan and country areas.
