Safer Communities Australia is a community-based organisation that has grown from what was known as the Safety House program, now called the Safety Assist program. This program is a voluntary network of approved houses, offices, shops, public buildings and public transport that display the Safety Assist sign as an indication that reliable help is available to anyone who has concerns for their safety. The Safety Assist logo on a letterbox, near the front of a house, in a window of a shop or other business premises indicates that it is a Safety Assist location. The problem could range from being lost, injured, bullied, frightened or feeling unsafe to needing to contact road service or call for emergency services. The occupants of Safety Assist premises will contact police, family, ambulance or other appropriate agencies as the situation requires. Police are called to attend Safety Assist premises: - in all cases involving molestation, suspicious behaviour and child abuse
- if parents, friends or family members cannot be contacted
- whenever a Safety Assist member requests assistance in dealing with a situation.

The South Australia Police work with Safer Communities Australia, participating in Stay Safe, a safety education program for schools. The program promotes awareness of the security that Safety Assist offers to children and the community. The Safer Communities web site www.safercommunities.asn.au also provides tips for children on staying safe at public events, while door knocking, on public transport, on the internet, and from bullies.
This program promotes links to other safety services and organisations in South Australia. The South Australia Police support many of these crime prevention programs and assist on local Safer Communities Australia committees. Visit www.safercommunities.asn.au for a list of associated organisations and to find out more about the Safety Assist program, or if you are interested in helping with the scheme.
