What is an expiation notice?

An expiation notice is a form provided to persons or companies who may breach an existing law which is deemed appropriate to expiate (pay a fine) rather than take the matter through the court system. The expiation notice can either be a handwritten notice issued by an 'authorised officer' or computer generated from a speed or red light camera offence.

Who are they issued by?

Expiations are issued by any person who is an 'authorised officer' under the various Acts of Parliament. Most people will come across an expiation either personally issued by a police officer or in the post from a speed or red light camera related offence, however various 'authorised officers' under different Acts may also issue expiations.
